Social City Mastery: Basic Principles

There are several principles you will need to get a handle on if you wish to be a Social City master:

Principle #1: It’s a game.

This fact might seem obvious, but recognizing that Social City is a game is a critical step towards awesome results. Like all games, Social City has rules. For example, everything has to be positioned on a grid square in the game. You probably won’t even have thought about that rule because it’s so implicit in the game. Social City is loaded with rules like this that you may or may not have consciously recognized.

This is significantMany of these rules bear only a passing resemblance to the real world.

Frequently in the real world houses are put on funny shaped lots, roads curve around neighborhoods and areas of a city are not perfectly square. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Why am I telling you this?

If you play Social City expecting it all to work like real life, you may be disappointed. But wait, that isn’t all bad.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t earn $100,000 each day - you’ll be able to in Social City. In addition, I am not entrusted with city planning, but I am in Social City. Now that you’ve got this in mind, let’s move on to…

Principle #2: Priorities determine results.

No matter whether you’re conscious of it or not, your priorities determine your results. Whatever you most want from a game determines the way you play the game. Those who are determined to succeed no matter what look very different from those simply trying to make friends and enjoy playing. Don’t forget, often this isn’t your conscious choice. You might not understand the underlying reason behind how you play the game.

Don’t fret, there’s no correct way to play Social City. But you should determine what you want out of the game before you start playing. Or in the more likely scenario that you’re already playing, take a moment to pick your priorities before continuing.

For example, you may decide you simply want to create an attractive city in which the population is happy. Congratulations! In that case, you don’t need to worry about specific strategies. Simply have fun and figure it all out as you go along.

You might want to get to a high level rapidly or have more people in your city than a handful of your friends. That’s awesome, too. However, you’ll want to develop a strategy that allows you to maximize your efforts in order to make that happen.

Either way, my articles will help you achieve your goals.

Which leads us to…

Principle #3: Have a goal.

I think that just about anything in life is more satisfying when you’ve got a goal.

Games are activities devoted to enjoyment and most of them have goals: Halo - shoot the aliens and stay alive; Monopoly - bankrupt all the others by charging them increasingly more money; Harry Potter video games - wave your wand in the right way to cast the spells to progress through the storyline; You get the idea. Games have goals - that’s how you know when you succeed.

Social City is a different sort of game, however. Expanding your city appears to be the goal, but how do you know when you’re finished? To make the game more fulfilling, I propose adding goals of your own.

Your goal could be to have a specific number of people in your city, to attain a certain level, to reconstruct your own real life city inside the virtual world of Social City or something else  .

Here’s my example of this: My goal is to get to Level 40 in 30 days of playing the game. In addition, I plan to spend only one hour a day to get it done. That’s right, I’m going to be working on a goal right alongside you!

Anyway, whatever your goal is, the thing is to have one. After that you can focus on what it takes to make your goal happen and enjoy the excitement of achieving it.

Recap (or the super-fast version)

Here’s a summary to help you remember these ideas:

  • Principle #1: It’s a game - Social City doesn’t keep to the rules of the real world. Learn the Social City rules and play by them. (Don’t worry, I’ll help.)
  • Principle #2: Priorities determine results - Sort out your priorities so you’re able to focus on achieving them without distraction.
  • Principle #3: Have a goal - Turn those priorities into specific goals to make your game play more fulfilling.
